OK, is the game plot for Sapphire and Ruby almost exactly the same as Emerald?

Yes, Ruby Sapphire and Emerald follow almost the exact same plot. The only differences are:

Ruby- You find Groudon and face Team Magma

Sapphire- You find Kyogre and face Team Aqua

Emerald- You find both Groudon and Kyogre and you face both teams.

Yes it is emerald just has as few nice extras and a different selection of whild Pokemon, and also of course the awsome rayquaza.

Yes. The contest places/rent 3 pokémon and battle (I forgot what they are called) are different.
