Question for Donkey Kong Country 3

I need help with saving. You know like in the 1st and 2nd game you can save once you beat a level, and that you can save even when you get the checkpoint of the level. I saved when I got the checkpoint than lost. Is my game broken or you will start all over again from the beginning of the level even when you saved when you got the checkpoint? Please help! Thanks
