Autovista Mode Guide

Latest update by CMBF on Jul 5th 2013
One of the most advertised features for Forza Motorsport 4 - and a feature that Turn 10 showed off to us at E3, was Autovista Mode, a simulated Virtual Reality-like interface that allows the player to walk around and use gestures (thanks to Kinect) to inspect and examine various features for each auto.

You can also use the standard gamepad controller to interface with Autovista - either way the Autovista Mode begins with a basic tutorial for the control you are using, with the 2010 Ferrari 458 Italia featured as the introductory car.

If that was not thrilling enough, when players engage the Autovista Mode and begin to explore each of the selected cars - the list is not the complete garage for FM4, rather it is a selection of cars from the garage - they are treated to a voice-over tour with observations by the BBC's Top Gear TV show presenter, Jeremy Clarkson, who in the process of providing the narration for each of the automobiles offers observations and information in his pleasant and instantly recognizable voice.

The full list of cars that are eventually available for exploring in Autovista Mode:

  • 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa
  • 1982 DeLorean DMC-12
  • 1993 McLaren F1
  • 1995 Ferrari F50
  • 2002 Ferrari Enzo Ferrari
  • 2005 Ford Ford GT
  • 2005 Mercedes-Benz SLR

Additional Cars that can be Unlocked
In addition to the tasty list above, there are two very special cars that can be unlocked for Autovista, and these are:

  • 1931 Bentley 8 Liter
  • 2554 AMG Transport Dynamics M12 Warthog

The Autovista Mini-Game

You are probably wondering at this point why your version of the game does not contain that long list of cars above or any cars for that matter save for this one Ferrari, right?, And just how you gain access to the two bonus cars?

The answer is simple - you have to complete the driving challenges that basically make up a sort of mini-game within the game for Autovista!

When you first access AV - that is what we will call Autovista from here on - you start by learning how to use the controls on the introductory Ferrari, and after you complete all of the prompted steps in this mini-tutorial, you will find that the car can now be fully explored, so step around to the front and begin that process now...

Fully Exploring the 2010 Ferrari 458 Italia Ticklist
(Starting from the front of the car and working your way around clockwise)

  • Open the Bonnet (Top Front)
  • Access the Model Overview (Left Lower Bumper)
  • Examine the Nose (Right Lower Bumper
  • Examine the Headlights (Left Front)
  • Examine the Ferrari Logo (Passenger Side Quarter Panel)
  • Open the Passenger Side Door (Passenger Side)
  • Close the Passenger Side Door while inside the car
  • Examine the Interior (Center Console Spot)
  • Examine the Transmission (Center Column between the seats)

Now open the door and get out of the car on the Passenger Side

  • Open the Boot and Zoom In (Read of the Car)
  • Examine the Engine (Inside the Boot)
  • Examine the Underbody (Right Bottom Bumper)
  • Paint the Car (Right Rear Driver's Side Quarter Panel)
  • Examine the Tyre (Front Driver Side Quarter Panel)
  • Open the Driver Side Door (Driver Side Door

Enter the car and sit in the Driver's Seat

  • Close the Driver's Side Door
  • Engage the Key (Ignition Button in the Steering Wheel)

Once you click on the key you will have fully explored the can and will unlock the Achievement for doing so: Car Explorer (10 G) Fully explore any car in Autovista. You will also have unlocked an Avatar Reward - The Autovista T-Shirt (Boy and Girl Versions).

At this point you then just need to use the steering wheel icon at the top of the steering wheel to activate the challenge, and then just complete it.

The 2010 Ferrari 458 Italia Challenge

The first thing you should know is that this is not about competition, it is about fun - so you can change all of the settings in the game play to easy so that your experience with the 7 computer-controlled opponents is relatively happy - since the idea here is more to enjoy each of these very amazing signature vehicles in the game.

The 458 Italia Challenge consists of a single lap on a fairly large track, and after you win - you did win, right? - after you win, you will receive the following Notice:

“Congratulations! You can now explore the 2010 Ferrari 458 Italia in Autovista!”

Well actually we already did that, right? Right! So well done you!

When you return to the AV showroom hit the B-Button and you will trigger and activate the Car Selection Menu - this adds a slider to the bottom of the screen and reveals the first set of cars you now have access to since you completed the first challenge.

The new set of cars consists of:

  • 2010 Ferrari 458 Italia
  • 2005 Ford GT
  • 2010 Lexus LF-A
  • 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

The remaining cars are all locked since you need to complete some more challenges before you gain access to them... So let us begin that process now!

The 2005 Ford GT

Selecting the 2005 Ford GT you can walk to the driver's side door, get in and start the engine - you do not have to complete the full Autovista examination to do the challenges.

The challenge for the Ford GT is to pass as many cars as you can - it being a passing challenge - and as you will see there is a target number of 10 cars - you have two full laps on a fairly long track and it would be surprising if you needed a full lap to get the initial ten passes, but either way you can safely take your time since you only need ten in total.

The 2010 Lexus LF-A

Select this car and climb inside, engage the ignition then select the challenge icon to learn that this time around it is a another passing challenge! The target for this race is again 10 cars, but this time around in place of the circuit and laps you are facing a winding and twisting mountain two-lane road that counts down the distance in percentage traveled.

In spite of the need to maintain firm control over the car and the relatively low speeds you will need for some of the turns you should not find this all that challenging, particularly in view of the fact that your car is a lot faster than the competition...

The 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

Climbing in and firing up the engine then selecting the challenge takes you to yet another passing challenge, on another straight run - and the target is 7 cars this time.

There is a very long straight run at the end, but you will want to have passed the target number well before you reach that, since once you do reach it the cars on it will be running flat out so passing will not be easy. If you handle the curves well you should have passed the 7th car before you reach the 50 % line.

You will find that completing this challenge does not unlock the other cars - to unlock them you have to complete THEIR challenges - so simply select each car and complete its challenge, at which point the notice that the car is now unlocked for Autovista touring actually does mean something...

You will find that the challenges that follow are basically variations on the established theme, and once you have unlocked all of the cars, that will unlock the two special cars and their challenges.
