Eventually you will reach a point in Final Fantasy XVI where hunts become available. It is essential that you take on these hunts as it is an opportunity to earn the crafting materials you will need to obtain stronger weapons and gear. Hunts will also allow you to earn a good chunk of experience and a lot of gil.
If your character dies in Final Fantasy XVI they will not be penalized, all that will happen is they will restart the battle. If it was a boss your character was going up against they will start at a mid-battle checkpoint. Take advantage of this when you enter into combat with a tough enemy with just one potion left. Instead of wasting time trying to defeat the enemy with insufficient potions you should just let the enemy kill your character, so they can return to the battle with a full potion inventory.
Torgal in Final Fantasy XVI is a wolf that is Clives companion. Torgal is able to heal Clive and attack enemies which makes him useful on the battlefield. Don't stress over Torgal if you find keeping up with his mechanic of giving him treats and petting him difficult as he'll still attack and heal, just less so on command.
Side quests in Final Fantasy XVI are represented on the local and world maps by green icons. Make sure that whenever you come across one of these green icons with a plus sign you don't skip it. The plus sign indicates that completing that particular quest will net you a reward beyond the standard gil and resources which will likely come in very useful, such as a rideable Chocobo to use in the game's open areas for example. Don't worry about skipping the side quests that don't have a plus icon.
Up until halfway through Final Fantasy XVI there is no need to worry about selling weapons and gear you no longer use in order to get gil. Later in the game once you find Blackthorne the blacksmith you should hang onto these items as he is able to craft legendary stuff which will require various weapons, pieces of gear, and hard to get crafting materials. If you already have what Blackthorne needs you can save having to refind or rebuy what you have sold. If you are desperate for gil you should complete a hunt for 10,000 gil instead of selling your weapons and gear for the couple of thousand max you would get.
Charon is the shopkeeper of your hideaway and Backthorne is the blacksmith, and it is essential that you regularly visit both to see if they have any new weapons or gear for you to craft or purchase. You can easily spot if there is something new in Final Fantasy XVI as the game will put a yellow-gold dot icon on characters and shops in the hideaway hub.
