You can improve your companions' HP and damage by upgrading the Training Camp facility. In addition to their default abilities, each Gun for Hire can learn new abilities after their 15th and 40th kills respectively. It's recommended to cycle the Gun for Hire you're bringing along and order them to kill as often as possible until they learn their third ability.
