Unlike the other games in the series, you don't necessarily need to actively hunt animals just to get access to better weapons. However, if you're a completionist, you'll need to actively hunt and skin animals to complete their respective challenges. Meats can be used for crafting baits while skins can be traded for resources and those resources can be used to craft any weapon. Certain Elite-ranked weapons however, do require skins of Monstrous Animals.

The skin of rarer, tougher animals can be traded for rare resources like Circuit Boards, Carbon Fiber, and Titanium. You can check which animal skin can be traded for a particular resource by accessing the Trade Loot option from any workbench.

To reveal which part of the region an animal can be found, you can either examine a road sign or buy a map from a roving trader or your Cartography facility in Prosperity.
