Epic Chef is a story-driven adventure game where you take on the role of Zest and embark on a comedic culinary quest where from humble beginnings you build a farm, grow delectable ingredients, craft machinery and cook your way to becoming the most Epic Chef in Ambrosia. With its abundance of farmland and no shortage of hungry patrons, Ambrosia is a dream location for budding chefs like Zest who want to open a restaurant. Crafting together delicious dishes with exquisite ingredients, seasonings and spices, it's up to Zest to beat his competition and impress Ambrosia's townsfolk. Epic Chef is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC. Take a look at our tips to get help in the game.
Below is a collection of hints and tips that will help you to progress in the game. These include why you should save your coins and how to increase your Chef Ranking.
Early in Epic Chef it is essential that you save up as many coins as you can in order to be able to afford the cooking competition entrance fees which will typically cost 100 coins. Acquiring coins early on is easy, the best ways are through completing mini-quests or by selling crops to certain NPCs. If you enter a quest-specific competition and think a battle is unwinnable, you can always surrender and have your entrance fee returned to you.
You can grow your own crops in the Villa grounds by digging a plot using the Hoe and then planting a bag of seeds. Each plant produces a fixed number of crops, which is displayed above the plant when Zest stands near it. The plant dies once the last crop has been harvested, and in order to grow more crops you will need to plant more seeds.
Your villa and farm are imbued with a special magic that allows your crops to grow in mere hours. Make sure you take advantage of this and harvest them every single day, sometimes even twice a day. Even the trees that you chop down for crafting wood will regrow overnight.
There are a variety of things you can craft in Epic Chef providing you have the required materials in your inventory, these include Special Ingredients for cooking and Bait used in fishing. In order to craft the item, you just need to select the recipe from the Specialist building.
In order to fish in the Concordian waters of Epic Chef, you must first equip Zest with his Fishing Rod. Then find a spot near the water's edge and cast the line. Some sea creatures are harder to catch than others, the more difficult the creature is to catch, the more Ingredient Flavors and more potent Synergy bonuses. You can increase your chances of catching something by using Bait which can be basic Ingredients such as Seaweed or a Crab. To catch the top bier creatures, you will need to craft specialist bait at the Bait Building.
Zest's culinary chef ranking in Epic Chef is leveled up by obtaining points through different activities, which are clearly displayed on your heads-up display in your menu. The easiest ones to gain points from are harvesting, crafting, farming, cooking, and eating your dishes. Remember also that you can gain passive points towards your overall chef ranking at certain idle areas that are denoted in-game by a colored marker. These include swimming and studying.
Once you get the hang of the basics in Epic Chef, it is important you understand the concept of Synergy and Aromas, as these techniques will help you considerably in defeating the other chefs in various culinary battles. Some ingredients have up to 3 score bonuses which are activated through Synergy, and added to the Dish Score. The three ways in which to activate a Synergy are:
- It is the first ingredient cooked in the pan.
- Ingredient properties 1 and 2 on an ingredient match the synergy conditions of another ingredient.
- An ingredient is paired with a specific ingredient.
You can create Aromas by letting ingredients cook idly before stirring. Finding the right combination of Synergy and Aroma is key to mastering the battles. To obtain a low Aroma score, you simply have to stir the flavors as they appear.
The villa that Zest calls home has a kitchen on the first floor that you can use at any time to practice your cooking. It is recommended that you do this every day, so you fully understand the mechanics of Epic Chef, which can become quite complex. Providing you have ingredients such as crabs, seaweed, rats, tomatoes and potatoes you will be able to freely practice your cooking. You can also get experience points, which will help you to level up your culinary ranking by sitting down at your kitchen table and tasting the dishes you create.
You will encounter plenty of NPCs in Epic Chef, and it is not immediately obvious which ones you can interact with. Most of these NPCs are just there to fill out the population, but there are also some that you can interact with to get helpful cues or hints that will help you considerably. Keep an eye out for NPCs that have a blue icon above their head, as this indicates they have a mini-quest you can complete which will enable you to earn some coins.
Zest moves through the world at a very slow pace, which can become tedious when you need to get around the city, beach, and villa areas to complete chores. After you complete the preliminary quests, you can obtain a small egg from an optional quest that hatches into an ostritch-looking dinosaur named Birch. This creature can be instantly summoned to Zests's location and offers storage for important ingredients, you will also be able to ride Birch to rapidly move through the explorable areas. Make sure you keep an eye on Birch's stamina because if it is reduced to O he will refuse to move. If this happens, you will need to replenish it by feeding him cooked dishes. Seafood and Meat will upgrade his maximum stamina and speed. Another way to fast travel in Epic Chef is to complete the city hangar quest, which unlocks airships you pay a 50 coin fee to take you to your destination.
The only way in which you can save your progress in Epic Chef is by having Zest sleep in his villa. The earliest time that he can go to sleep is 10pm.
