Clear Your Inventory

Inventory management is important in Colossal Cave. During the course of the games you will discover numerous items, and out of all of them only a few will be used more than once. Keep in mind that some of these items prevent the solving of certain puzzles, which means they must be dropped in order to progress.

Carved Runes Unlock Fast Travel

Colossal Cave has a huge open-world, so it is essential that you take advantage of its fast travel system to get around quickly. Keep an eye out for the 'XYZZY' runes that are scattered around the cave as they allow you to move between them and reach locations previously passed in the game.

Search for Items

It is essential that you search for items as you progress in the game as they will help you to bypass roadblocks or unlock secrets that can aid you in navigating the cave. Items are also crucial for solving the game's puzzles. When you find an item its use will almost never be obvious and will require some thinking to use it effectively.

Inspect Everything

At the start of the game you will be placed into first-person view, and you will need to use your visual senses to navigate down dark tunnels. You have a reticle on screen that appears when an interactable item or clue is in range. You will then be given the option to interact or inspect these objects which will trigger special effects that will trigger a puzzle or unlock further progression.

Dwarves

One of the biggest dangers in Colossal Cave are dwarves, and you will have no choice but to defend yourself in combat against them. Dwarves are random encounters that appear in a puff of smoke and will attack you with a dagger. In the early game dwarves are easy to defeat but later on, when they appear in larger numbers they represent a big problem you have to deal with.
