The Classic NES Series games were a way to bring back the games of old that started some of the amazing franchises of today. Classic NES Series: Castlevania is one of these games. This game was the start to all the vampire-killing of the Castlevania series we know and love. You start out in Dracula's Castle, and you work your way through the castle, facing various enemies and bosses along the way, until you finally reach Dracula. Your main weapon, which is the main weapon of most Castlevania games, is the whip. To be more specific, it is the Vampire Killer. The main goal is to slay Dracula once and for all.
Classic NES Series games kept the look of the original game so that veteran gamers could remininsce on the days of old. It was also to introduce young gamers to the games that were the beginning of a game they may be playing. Castlevania kept it's graphics, which were for the NES, so they aren't great. However, the graphics are not that bad considering when this game was made. The layout and the design of the castle is very intricate for it's time. Classic NES Series: Castlevania may not have the best graphics of the series, but it is still nice for it's age.
For sound, this game gets a six out of ten. The music back when this game was made could not be anything close to the wonderfully orchestrated music of modern videogames. The basics of Castlevania's music is basically a bunch of electronic beeps in various tones. That's really the only way to describe it. However, because of the fact that it even has background music is a plus itself, for some classic games featured little or no BGM at all. So, overall, sound quality is a 6 for the fact that most of the music sounds the same.
Classic NES Series: Castlevania has great gameplay. Controls are basic, just use weapon, sub-weapon, jump, move, and crouch are all you need. The concept of various stages of the castle, each with it's own boss, is a lot different than today's Cstlevania games. Most have free roaming ability. However, the stage method still gives the player a sense of how big Dracula's castle really is. Believe it or not, this is actually a hard game. It is very easy to die due to the fact that there are very few oppurtunities to heal. However, it is the score that matters in this game. Most players ignore the score and just beat the game, but the hi-score system definitely gives this game a boost.
Classic NES Series: Castlevania will last a long time. There are quite a few levels, and the odds that you will beat each level without dying at least once is very slim. Each boss provides it's own unique challenge, so a different strategy is needed for each one. Pro gamers might even have a problem beating this game quickly. Even if you beat the game, you will want to play it again so that you can find the hidden items to boost your hi-score. Though it may seem like a short game, Castlevania is actually long and intricate.
I would have to give Classic NES Series: Castlevania an eight out of ten. Even though sound and graphics is quite lacking, the gameplay more than makes up for it. Most gamers buy games based on how it looks, and to them, this game would not be good. However, this is a really good game, and is a must-have for all who want a challenge in their videogaming.
