Hey Guy117 here and today we will review Castlevania: Judgment in case you didn't know all ready lol. So we all know Castlevania is famous for it's awesome side-scrolling action and, for some games, the interesting mix of RPG elements. But then we got a Castlevania fighter for Wii named Castlevania: Judgement. Did it work out? Let's find out.
So. The graphics. For a Wii game the graphics are not too bad. The real mistake comes with the character design. Takeshi Obata, the artist for Death Note, was called to make the character design. The problem with his work is that it is based too much on Death Note character design and not on how the characters looked like in previous games. They overuse belts on the characters, especially the Belmonts. Even Trevor Belmont's shoes have belts! They really messed up here and that one of the reasons Castlevania fans disliked this game.
The sound effects for the game are pretty decent and there isn't really anything wrong with it. The music is the best thing about this game. Music from past games were recreated and many of them sound even better than the original ones. The music sure helps improve the gameplay but is the gameplay itself any good?
There are 13 playable characters from past games and one original character. Each with their own attacks and sub-weapons. The controls for the game are very simple. You have a regular attack and combo button, you have your sub-weapon button, you have your special moves button which has to be combined with the normal attack button to work, you have a jump button, you have a guard button, and a special attack button. So two fighters battle on a 3-d plane. There are also stage hazards and items you can interact with on the stage. On the HUD you have the name of the character above their picture, next to that is their life bar.In between the two life bars is the timer. On the bottom you have a picture of the sub weapon you currently have and a bar which represents your magic power. Some moves require magic power and when it's completely filled it is possible to use your special attack which takes away about half the opponents life bar. The gameplay is not so bad with the exception of the camera which is usually at a bad angle. If Dracula is the fighter on the camera's side, it is almost impossible to see the other fighter due to Dracula's height and his cape covering the other fighter most of the time. It is possible to play online which is usually lag free but not many people play online now and it is difficult to find someone. The other modes are the Story mode which you fight many battles to advance through the story,Arcade mode where you fight a set amount of opponents to get the highest score possible, VS mode which you can have free battles with other players or with the CPU, Castle mode which you fight characters in order to reach Dracula at the top of Castlevania, and Survival mode which you fight infinite battles until you are defeated. You can also connect to Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia for DS to unlock exclusive accessories and also. Shanoa and Aeon quicker.
Once you beat story mode with every character you can do it again but instead you will fight Aeon a 2nd time and he is harder. After that you will fight the Time Reaper in one last battle. Once your done with story mode you can spend your time beating Castle mode with everyone and trying to unlock everything. Then you can play VS mode or play online. It shouldn't last you very long...
So this game is very mediocre. I suggest you rent it even if you're a Castlevania fan. The only thing that really stands out is the music (and maybe the fact you can play as Death and Dracula). Hopefully you can play online a few times which isn't too bad. That's it for now then.
