Introduction

Band Hero is a game that took me by surprise. I have to admit, I got it as a gift and when I saw the track list I wasn't too impressed. "Three Taylor Swift songs!?" I thought. I mean with a series such as the Guitar Hero series you expect every title to have some of the greatest modern and classic rock songs, not drab pop songs. I quickly realized however that the games had it's fair share of great songs that I've been waiting for. Pretty soon the great gameplay and songs that got me hooked on the series was keeping me surprised.

Graphics

The graphics for this is excellent when portraying the players and their instruments on stage. However the "audience" is very badly made and animated and everyone looks almost exactly alike. The menu's are smooth and Create A Rocker function features some impressively made pieces of wardrobe and instruments that can be seen while playing.

Sound

This is a rhythm game thus sound is everything. When you quickly glance at the track list you'll see that this game was intended for a more mainstream audience, featuring current and classic pop songs for a change. There is still some tracks that keep rock fans happy like Lifeline by Papa Roach and Mr. Roboto by Styx. Not to mention the classic American Pie by Don McLean. The tracks were obviously selected to appeal to a wider audience. This game could've used with a few more tracks but it's good nonetheless.

Other than that the audience sound realistic(unlike how they look) and the various sound effects like menu noises and the sounds made when you miss a note are great.

Gameplay

Well this is the real test. Will this game deliver on gameplay like the rest of the series? Yes it does. Nothing has changed in terms of gameplay from the previous titles but that's exactly what keeps the series so entertaining, the simple "pick up and play" party fun. Of course it has some new features like the sing along that can be compared to the Singstar series. It wasn't really needed but provides more entertainment for those not particularly skilled in guitar or drums.

Lastability

The great thing about the Guitar Hero franchise is that it never gets old. You can play every song imaginable but you'll never feel finished unless you absolutely rock at every song. If you're a seasoned player the campaign should take about a day or two. If you're new to the series(which was what this title attempted to attract.) then you'll find the campaign a fun way of learning about the game while increasing their skill.

If you ever get tired of the songs available you could always download a DLC, which you get to choose, for a small price. There is also the option of downloading/creating custom songs for free. You can find some impressive original creations there.

Overall

This game is appealing to persons of every age and is very gender neutral in it's song choices. The bonus that it comes with a full band set makes it even more of an attractive game to add to your collection. Overall, it's a job well done and Activision can be applauded for it.

Final Score: 82%
