Top 10 Coolest Retro Games You Have to Try

6. Mario Bros.

Remember Jumpman? We talked about him earlier. He was the protagonist in Donkey Kong that was dodging barrels and fireballs. In 1981, he was fondly nicknamed Jumpman. Two years later, Nintendo solved the mystery of who this Italian-American man was and named him Mario. In Mario Bros., we get to follow Mario and his little brother Luigi as their job leads them to outrageous places. Mario and Luigi are plumbers that have a hankering for pizza and solving New York City's plumbing problems. When strange creatures inhabit the sewers of NYC, Mario and Luigi begin to investigate. Gamers get to control Mario and sometimes Luigi as they travel the sewers and outsmart villains such as Shellcreepers.

7. PacMan

It's impossible to discuss the top 10 coolest retro video games without considering PacMan. In 1980, Toru Iwatani created the iconic character that chomped on tiny balls and was haunted by adorable ghosts. At first, the game was only available in Japan. Five months after its release, it was officially released in North America, but serious gamers already knew about the game. In fact, PacMan is one of the highest-grossing video games of all time. This arcade game has inspired an entire franchise that is still popular nearly 40 years after its debut. The best part about PacMan's popularity is that it is a simple game with adorable characters, which makes it memorable as an 80s pop culture icon and a game every person should play at least once in their life.

8. Contra

In 1987, video games were coming out faster than gamers could play them. For this reason, Contra is memorable. Not only was the run/action video game a first of its kind, but it was also based in a future world. When we say it was a first of its kind, it isn't the run/action part that was original. Instead, it was the fact that two gamers could play simultaneously that made this game a must try. After getting the backstory, snippets of the year 2633-game were displayed during game play and were designed to help the defeat the evil Red Falcon.

9. Doom

I know what you're thinking, didn't Doom just come out? The answer is no! The original Doom was released in 1993 and is most memorable by players of the time because it was one of the first games that mixed sci-fi and horror together. In this first person shooter game, players assumed the role of a space marine whose only mission was to destroy demons from hell. Doom spin-offs have been created, and the game has even been re-released, but none of these titles can live up to the excitement and allure of the horrific shooting game that was originally released in '93.

10. Sonic the Hedgehog

During the last half of the 80s and well into the 90s, the video game market was dominated by Nintendo. As Sega struggled to stay relevant and attract new gamers, it turned to its development team to create a mascot for the company and a game to support it. Thankfully, developers didn't disappoint. Sonic the Hedgehog was an adorable hedgehog with blue spikes and a cool dude demeanor. This mischievous hedgehog looked cute but was able to kick butt at the same time. Sonic's job was to defeat the nefarious Dr. Robotnik, who kidnapped and froze innocent animals. Not only did Sega gain popularity thanks to Sonic but it also launched a franchise that is still known and easily recognized today.
