Destroy Bushes to get Hearts

At the start of the game, Arietta is given a wooden sword from her father. Although it is not a powerful weapon, it does allow you to take on the simple enemies such as wasps and bats. You can also use the sword to destroy the bushes you find scattered around the world, which will provide hearts that will restore your health. Make sure you take advantage of the bushes you find just before the first main boss fight.
