Whenver you match crates you will obtain item tiles such as bows, spells, bombs, and food. You can use the bows and spells to slow or damage enemies from a distance, bombs can be used to break all crate tiles on the level and food boosts your adventurers energy so that they are able to move farther away from falling off the screen. Avoid cluttering the level by not saving more than two item tiles at a time.
