When your mine/quarry/farm gets low, use short contracts to get from 1% down to 0% without completely consuming the resources, then get the most powerful engine with the best cars on the longest contract to get the most resources. I just got my 30 day decapod and used gold to buy 3 Big Open Box Cars and instead of getting 5-24 gold with a lesser configuration on a short trip, I am getting 2160 coal out of the mines on the last trip. Since there seems to be a fixed amount of resource, it doesn't really matter if I use a Mogul, Pacific or Decapod while grinding it down, so I make sure my Decapod makes the last contract before resource exhaustion. As long as you have a Decapod, having 3 Big Open Box Cars, 3 Carriage Dump Carts and 3 Large Flatcars are more important than having a second Decapod.
