Most of the enemies will use their powerful spells early in a bout so a good tactic is to save up your best offensive spells. Try to use the spells just before your lance hits so the enemy does not have enough time to launch counter spells. You do not need all 16 spells to complete the game but make sure your knight is well levelled up for the spells that you tend to use the most.
