It is crucial that you keep one or two Sentry Guns on hand for Massive Onslaughts. These need to be strategically positioned, so they point at chokepoints the aliens will have to travel through in order to get to you.
A good tactic is to have at least one Marine use Suppressive Fire in the direction the xenomorphs will come from. When you do this you will significantly lower their movement speed which will result in giving your other Marines a chance to take them out before they get too close.
Welding doors shut once your squad is in a room is a good tactic if you have time to prepare for an onslaught. This is because it will take the aliens a bit of time to break down the door and during that time they will have bunched up giving you the opportunity to take down a significant number of them with a single grenade as soon as they come through the door.
Try to make as little noise as possible as every shot fired or explosion detonated will attract any xenomorphs that are in the area to your location. Keep in mind that it is in your best interests to avoid unnecesary firefights as Alien Aggressiveness increases as you engage the aliens.
Even though resources are not hard to come by you should still try and conserve them whenever possible. This is because there will be instances where you will need to weld two or three doors shut in order to give your squad a rest from the xenomorphs trying to get you, and you will need plenty of medical supplies for when your team is unexpectedly ambushed by the aliens.
When you extract your team in Aliens: Dark Descent you are not giving up on the mission, you will still be able to return and complete it with a fresh batch of troops that are not traumatized. The downside which you need to keep in mind is that every day that passes advances the Infestation level of the planet towards its next level.
