Alan Wake 2 Beginner Cheats and Tips

Alan Wake 2 is a survival horror game played from a third-person perspective that follows Alan Wake, who has been trapped in an alternate dimension for 13 years as he attempts to escape by writing a horror story involving an FBI special agent named Saga Anderson and the investigation of a series of murders across Bright Falls and beyond. Take a look at our Alan Wake 2 Beginner Cheats and Tips to get help progressing in this game which is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Alan Wake 2 Beginner Cheats and Tips

  • Return to Saga's Mind Room Often

When you begin playing Alan Wake 2 one of the first mechanics you will be introduced to is Saga Anderson's interactive Case Board in the Mind Room. If you are playing as Saga Anderson you should return to the Case Board regularly to place discovered clues in the correct places to advance objectives and the story.

You should return to the Case Board whenever you are not sure what Saga should be doing next. Simply look for the yellow dots on the Case Board menus as they indicate actions that need to be taken. Once done the yellow dot will turn green indicating that part of the investigation is complete. Keep in mind that when you go to the Mind Room gameplay does not pause.

  • Check other Case Files on the Case Board

In the Mind Room Saga Anderson will have access to different case files in a filing cabinet which allow her to keep track of all the different lines of the investigation. You must check other case files to ensure you don't miss anything important. You can see if there is something that needs to be done when the case file is marked with a yellow dot.

  • Explore Everywhere for Clues, Collectibles, and Maps

Make sure you thoroughly explore everywhere when investigating an area. If you are playing as Saga Anderson you will need to explore off the beaten track in different locations to find clues or collectibles like lunchbox locations containing manuscripts which are required to upgrade weapons. Exploring areas off the main path such as the diner at Bright Falls will also enable you to discover more maps to further aid you.

  • Aim for Enemy Weak Spots

The most effective strategy to survive against the enemies you encounter in Alan Wake 2 is to first weaken them using light from your torch and then attack their weak spots. When you shed light on an enemy you will also reveal their weak spots which will be highlighted in red. To then take down enemy quickly you should target their weak spots to deal more damage and conserve ammo.

  • Learn How to Dodge Enemy Attacks

Being proficient at dodging incoming enemy attacks is crucial to surviving in Alan Wake 2. These attacks will be from long range in the form of a projectile being thrown to a melee attack where an enemy has crept up to you and is swinging an axe or some other weapon at you. Whatever the attack you need to make sure you perform a well-timed dodge to avoid it so you save on health.

  • Save often

Make sure you get into the habit of manually saving your game regularly to avoid finding yourself repeating sections when you get killed in combat. When you play as Saga Anderson the game will introduce you to break-out rooms where you will be able to quick-save your game. Make sure you take advantage of them whenever you get the opportunity.

Keep in mind when playing as Saga Anderson that before you reach the first break-out room the game will be auto-saving your progress at key points, so up until then there is no need to complete a chapter in one session.

  • Look Out for Emergency Boxes

If you played the original Alan Wake and Alan Wake Remastered you will be familiar with the red supply boxes that contain things like ammunition and health. Make sure you keep an eye out for these Emergency Boxes in the environment, especially near boss battles. Collecting all the contents inside the red supply boxes can take a bit of time so you need to pick your moment when you resupply your equipment with these Emergency Boxes.

To open an Emergency Box you will need to have the Screwdriver. Once you have it you can open Emergency Boxes by interacting with the lock and then selecting the Screwdriver from the menu that pops up. You get the Screwdriver during one of Saga Anderson's main missions in Coffee World, a few chapters into the game.

  • Take Advantage of Light

Light in Alan Wake 2 can be used as a defensive mechanic against the enemies you encounter. Against certain enemies, lit areas can be used as a safe zone that they cannot penetrate. To some enemies, you will become invisible when you enter these Save Haven areas that not only give you a chance to restore your health but also allow you to plan an escape route.
