(This works best for Ace players who are very good at the game)

Drop back to a low position and pick-up an item

Recommend: Bullet Bill, Star, Lightning, Blue Shell

Hold your item till a critical moment (Even if you are 1st)

If your opponents have lightning or a blue shell is approaching you, use this item to save yourself from the one attack.

Further tips on this: Draw the blue shell to others as well to maximize damage.

Lightning should be used to get rid of those items before they are used.
