Finishers

I enter the finisher,but nothing will happen.
For example,
I defeated my foe,and it said finish him!,i was scorpion,and pressed the buttons *d-pad*down,down,down,b
And I just hit him? Do I have to stand so far,hold a button while pressing the
Finisher,or am I just bad at finishers?

No, you're not bad at them. You're just simply doing them from the wrong distance. For example: If after the finisher it says '(close)', it means you have to be within close proximity of your opponent. So just look next to the finisher, wherever it may be that you read them from, and go to where it says to go.
