Why does the story end after you kill the colonel and you can't play on after that while in other games you can keep playing? Is there a way to keep playing?

Ok....you can play the game after, but this is what you can do.
1. The game saves automatically when you go into the memorial. Choose it for the load menu and leave the gift shop. Continue off of that....just don't kill the colonel. 2. Get the Broken Steel DLC if you have Xbox Live. The game continues after that...or you can wait til August to get the add-ons for Fallout 3 in stores. Operation Anchorage and The Pitt are already in stores for a fun fact.
Point Lookout, a new Fallout DLC will be with the Broken Steel DLC when it comes out in August in stores.
I don't know why it is like that and no, it just end and you reload your saved game, then do what you want, like missions or expansions.
Sorry I have to tell you this but the game ends after you kill coloneal autum, it just ends and then you can start the game over and try to get all the quest completed, but the story just ends and then you can start over but it's not worth it.
You can't play after it ends which is a real bummer. If you buy Broken Steel though you can play after it ends for as long as you want.
It's like that because Bethesda went stupid when they were finishing the game and decided to end it like that. If you have Fallout 3 on the computer then you can play after the ending, but I'm not sure what the commands are. You'll have to look that up.
