how do you get people to join you?
My friend got a super mutant brute to join him but idk how the hell he did it

You probably mean Fawkes. If you play through the story you'll eventually meet him. If you have good karma after escaping from Raven Rock then he'll join up with you.

Either it is a Glitch, Fawkes, or just plain luck. You meet Fawkes later in the game. He will join you if you have Good Karma from Escaping Raven Rock.

You might mean fawkes, you first meet him in a vault on the quest the garden of eden after you help him get out of his cell he'll help you get to the geeck and then you go to raven rock. After you escape raven rock and your karma is high enough he'll join you.

Oh yes, Fawkes. Annoying to get, since you have to be good, but totally worth it.
Go through the main story until you get to the quest, "Finding the Garden of Eden". You'll get to Vault 87, where there is supposedly a G.E.C.K. That can make the water purifier work. Go through until you hear a crackling voice in the vault. Straight ahead should be a Super Mutant looking at you through a glass window that is sealed in a room. That's Fawkes. Talk to the intercom and Fawkes will tell you how to release him/her (Debatable on gender). You need to go to the end of the hallway on the right and release his/her cell. You can hack a computer with the right skill inside, next to a computer, and if so, you can open only Cell 5, Fawkes' cell. IF that fails, trip the fire alarm with the other computer and all the cells will open. Beware, because this also releases three Centaurs and a crazy, hostile human named Sid. Fawkes, as part of the agreement they made with you, will lead you to the G.E.C.K. And help you retrieve it (You can trade weapons with Fawkes to get the unique weapon, "Fawkes' Super Sledge"). He/She will go in and get it for you, and then you'll part ways. You'll get captured by the Enclave on the way out, and you'll need to escape Raven Rock, completing the quest "The American Dream" in the process. Once you get outside, Fawkes will be out there shooting down Enclave troops. If you have good Karma, you can ask Fawkes to join your party. If you don't ask him/her, or you don't have good Karma, they'll be hanging out outside of Underworld later. Fawkes is a great companion, as he/she can carry a LOT of your stuff, and he/she has a Gatling Laser with unlimited ammo. Probably the best follower.
