Well the best way to kill them is to shoot them in the head, but since you just left the vault I don't think you have the right level for it... Or have a good weapon or enough ammo...yet.
There should be a marker on your map called megaton, go there and disarm the bomb and get a house there, or blow it up and get a house at tenpenny tower. I suggest you disarm it and go to moira at crater side supply and do the quest to help her write the survival guide, as this will get you know know the area around the waste land and get you some better weapons than just the 10 mm pistol, as atleast the hunter rifle or automatic rifle would be best to take on the ants. A level 24 explosives is needed to disarm the bomb. If you don't have that then you may want to restart the game and adjust your " tag skill "
Or reload to a point in the game before you left the vault as it will ask you if you want to re adjust your " tag skill " and " level up " skill points points.

The quest "Those!" is probably too tough for you at the start. You probably are still just stuck with a pistol, a baseball bat, and your BB gun. Go to Megaton and take the quest from Moira Brown, "The Wilderness Survival Guide". Now, choose the Radiation task. Go down to the nuke in the middle of the city, and drink the water by it until you have 600 rads and go back to Moira brown to get some meds and a perk that regenerates limbs if you have high radiation. Now, pick the food task. Go to the Super Duper Mart. Here's where you'll find the good stuff: If you're lucky, you'll find a Combat Shotgun, an Assault rifle, and maybe even a 10mm Sub Machine Gun on some raiders you need to kill. Hot key those weapons and then search the store and find a couple laser pistols and weapons. The Super Duper Mart has a LOT of good stuff if you look around enough, including a mini nuke, a stash of nuka-cola and nuka-cola quantum, some more weapons, a ton of ammo, and a lot of food and medicine, so take your time exploring here.
Get a bunch of 5.56 mm rounds for your assault rifle, shotgun shells for you Combat Shotgun, 10mm rounds for you machine gun, and try to find a hunting rifle and some .32 caliber rounds. Those will be your primary weapons early on, and if you can get Moira to repair them or get a high repair skill yourself (Which I HIGHLY recommend) you'll have no problem knocking the quests down. When you finally do go after the fire ants, I suggest using your assault rifle or sub machine gun at medium range. DO NOT let them get close, or your bum will be roasted faster than you can say "BBQ". The Hunting Rifle works well on them too.
Hope this helps.
