No. While Split-screen sounds cool, there are so many little things that would make it fail. For instance, it's not like an FPS where you have a set path, so you're forced to work together. With split screen on an open world game, players would probably split up, taking away from the whole experience. There's also the odd time travel deal, where if you left an area, either you would have to have a buddy come with you by force, or he'd be in a whole different time then you once you're done traveling. That causes many problems and is just way too confusing. In addition, having one player load an area while another is exploring a town or fighting is a good way to cause a major flaw or error in the game. Also, even if that was made to work some how, a person would be tempted to simply screw up another hero's world in a different town while they spend time traveling there.
I don't know if Mercenaries 2 is split-screen, but if it is, I think that's a whole different story, because I believe that it's open world is different from Fable's, where most of it is loaded in the beginning, and you can simply wander without time changes or loading screens. I've never played it, so I may be wrong, but it's just my opinion.
There is no split-screen co-op, it is shared screen. And the camera will drive you crazy.
