All boss characters besides the shot gunner have a pack. Yours will have one on his back keep shooting until it explodes. The easiest way is to tell your partner to hold and you go up and fain your death. Once the heavy goes past jump up and unload into his pack.

There will be a pouch on the heavy's back. You can tell your partner to hold position and if he builds up aggro, then you're home free to take him out (the boss).
