To put a spin on a tennis ball, you have to hit the ball early while it's in the air. The whole trick is timing. If you flick the ball early, it will have a backspin and go left. If you flick it late, it will go to the right.
To put a spin on the ball you have to pull your wrist upwards as you hit the ball. Forehand: As you hit the ball and pull it behind your shoulder, flick your wrist so it faces the sky.
Backhand: As you hit the ball and pull it to your side, flick your wrist so it faces the ground.

It's all about the timing. If you hit it early enough you will put some spin on the ball. If you hit it late than it will give you a backspin I think.
