For some reason, I can't find anyone to play online with in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It keeps saying "seeking..." and no one comes no matter how long I wait. All I can do is spectate players. What's going on?

You're probably starting a match from the With Friends menu. If there's nobody online on your Friend Roster, then of course you won't find anybody. You need to select With Anyone to battle with random people. If you are going to With Anyone and can't find anyone, then it's probably because not many people are playing anymore, since the games been out for three years now. There's nothing you can do about that except just keep trying.
I assume that there is nobody around your area that wants to play online or the internet cannot detect anybody nearby to play with because they may be far away. Since the internet service still hasn't been discontinued yet, you are still able to play online for games on your Wii. If it's not that, then you should consult the Wii Operations Manual or ask Nintendo through their official website.
