But,if you hold down the 'L' button on the Gamecube controller,you can automaticaly play as her.

I think you can if you use a controller without a numchuck if you choose samus and press B enough times I don't know if it actually works but you can give it a try

Play as Samus.
In order to change to Zero Suit Samus,
For Gamecube:Hold the R Trigger.
For Wii Remote with the Nunchuk:Hold the Z Button.
For Wii Remote only:Hold the Minus (-) button.

You can't get her on the character screen if you want to use her at the start of the battle simply hold the shield button. In the subspace emissary put your cursor over her and presss C and she will appear in that screen, however that's the most you can do.

Well she won't come up on the character screen,but you can still play as her right from the beginning.all you have to do is hold Z while selecting samus.

Once you press on samus,hold the shield button right away!You can press on anything else.Once you got to the stage choose,let go and pick your map.Its the reaction when she uses the smash ball(not the beam part)she takes of her suit and becomes a zero suit samus right in the start(not naked...).hope I helped!

She can't pop up on the character screen but on the gamecube controller if you hold the r botten
