My bad. last one didn't make sense...

I meant to say, I tried smashing a random blue square with a golden hammer, and it wouldn't break, why might this be? Also, how do you get golden hammers?

Golden Hammers can only work on the red squares, those that are adjacent to already unlocked items. This means that, before using a Golden Hammer, you must first unlock at least one item.

As to actually getting the Golden Hammers, they are in the same square as some not yet unlocked items.

Your answer is pretty easy to answer.
The reason why the blue box won't open is that because you were not able to unlock all it's surrounding box-buddies. You can get Golden Hammers for doing specific requirements in the little boxes. If you break one with a hammer,you get and smash open a random box without fulfilling the requirement.

You can see which Red Square's has a Golden Hammer in it cause it's behind
The Item inside the Box, you can only get a Total of 5 Golden Hammer's use
Them Wisely.

Red blocks can not be broken unless you get right next to them.also certain challenges like beat SSE mode can not be broken with the golden hammer

Yes.Acctually, any blue block can be broken, but not every red one...Also theres only 5 golden hammers. Theyre in certain types of blocks like play 30 hours of brawl.Hope I helped!!!
