You get the thermal scope after encountering your first Regenerator in the laboratory. You can either fight or run past him and enter a frozen autopsy room. You exchange cards with the waste disposal card key and press the big red button near it. The room will stop cooling down. There, a cutscene will occur showing the box that the thermal scope is in. Once you take it, a regenerator will come to life and walk at you. Use the scope to point out and shoot the parasites in it's body. HINT: there is usually one parasite on it's back, shoot it's leg to get a good shot of it's back.

Chapter 5-1 and as the dude above said after you face the first regenerator, and then there is another one when you go to the freezer and then when you have the infrared scope the red things on the regenerators bodies are what you want to shoot but the ones right in where you get the scope at don't have one on their backs until pro mode. Now when you get sort of farther in the game you will meet you first iron maiden. You will know the difference because it will show a video of it coming though a door doing the weird breathing sound and it will look different cause it has spikes on it this one has a plagas on it's back. The infrared scope DOES NOT WORK ON REGULAR PEOPLE, YOU WILL JUST LET THEM GET CLOSER TOO YOU!!!!! And once you beat the game you can just sell it you will find it in the same place the second time through.
