Simply go into Battle and go to Free Battle. Select 2 players with 2 Wii Remotes. Make sure you have at least two Battle Passes, Friend Passes and Rental Passes.
You have to have both Wii-motes, and save each pass to the Wii-mote being used, then use Player 1 to get the "Friend Pass" to play in "Free Battle" mode. With Player one, go through, get your rental pass all set up. Save that to Player 1 Wii-mote in the "Save" area under "Save Battle Pass". With Player 1 Wii-mote, (have Player 2 handy), do the same thing (new game) and set up another Rental Pass, and use Player 1 to navigate through to saving (same steps) to Player 2 Wii-mote. Then, go back into "Save" (with Player 1 Wii-mote), and "Load Battle Pass" from Player 2. That should give you your "Friend Pass", and you should be able to play in "Free Battle" after that. (I just did all of this so my daughter could play with her Dad.) It's a little complicated, but once you have the passes saved to Player 1 and Player 2 Wii-motes, you can use them in Free Battle mode to play against one another. Good luck!
