I've been trying to beat the level where you rescue Fiona (not sure what the level is called) but I can't seem to get through it without Edward dying. I want to just get it over with, but I would like to know how many contributions Edward makes in the dialogue between levels before I save with his death. Thank you :D

Edward has virtually no impact on the story whatsoever from this point onwards in the game. The only things you'll miss are two or three Info conversations (the optional ones at Base), and none of them involve you getting any free items or good advice.
It's worth saving him, though, although it is difficult if you can't train him up early on in the game. Just keep in mind that he, along with Micaiah, Jill and Nolan, is one of the few good units in Micaiah's party and he's worth saving.
Ya know, if he is weak then, just try to push his location back and forth, attack with him, then make a wall of stronger units around him.
You'll miss out on a free sword towards the end of the game and he has a few conversations later on in the game. I suggest that if you can't keep him alive you keep him out of the fight.
Edward has the most potential of any mymrdon/swordmaster/trueblade, he maxed out 4 or five stats as mymrdon and swordmaster (without any stat boosting items) and I just promoted him to trublade, only level 3 and already maxed out one stat. Plus, you get the sword caladbolg which is only usable by him, and is fairly stong and helpful until you get the vague katti/alondite. He's really worth training, but if he keeps dying now it just might be too late...
So, either train him up good, or leave him out of the party entirely, it's better to focus on a small number of units anyway.
