How do you enter cheat codes? I can get to the cheat menu but not type it in!

If you refer to the hand manual with the game under the cheats is this extract "The succesful closing of a case will sometimes result in a special cheat being unlocked. These cheats can be turned on or off on the Cheats section of the Options Menu." So basically if you want to cheat you've got to be good at the game? So what are cheats for agan?
