Complete Treaure hunt quests, found on the right side of the gathering hall.
They come as a reward, but not everytime.
Not quite sure for monster hunter 2 but on number 1 I got them from killing khezu in the training school.
If you beat diablos and I think gravios in the training school you'll get them 8 times out of ten, I'm not 100% sure about the gravios bit but give diablos a go and you should get some, jsut a point expand pickaxes only give you one extra peice of ore based on what you combined it with, eg: 1 machalite ore and an expand pickaxe will give you 2 machalite ore
