best weapon

I've been using longswords for my entire monster hunter career. So is it time to switch? My eyes are on great swords, but they are way too slow, but I guess I can adjust. Or do I go for a different weapon?thanks!

Great swords may be slow, but so are hammers. Keep in mind nothing lands a smack on the head like wither of them. As long as you learn to charge with correct timing you'll be shredding with a GS. Personally they are my fav and have been since MH1, But I find hammers to be much more powerful in the later versions like MHF2. If your looking for speed + power try shooting for a good set of duals as with the right set you can shred things like regular Los and Ian in literally 4-5 mins max. Lances have always been good especially with the addition now of gunlances and with practice you can use a lance (basically the slowest weapon ingame) and take down a speedy blagonga or tigrex with ease. I call the technique turtling (Guard +2 skill and Guard up skill) but doing so with the Gld Dragonwood Gunlance I can take a G-Rank plesioth without a hit on me making kills much faster and easier. Ranged items I wish I could help with but I'm a ranging nubber. Oh and don't leave SNS out, they may have a low raw hit on most but an Azure Ogre is a huge force to be reckoned with on most enemies including lao. Just keep in mind it's all going to work according to how positive you make the transition and the willingness to learn a new move set. Personally I suggest Hammers for the best new weapon if you want short training time to get good, GS if your willing to practice the charge timers, and Lance/GL/HH/DS/SNS as a alternative only if your really willing to learn to fight correctly with them. You may get eaten alive by the big time baddies otherwise. Good luck. =)

I think you should swap to great swords thats what I didd and I find that the great swords are slow but much better once you get used to them. If you do decide to swap to great swords I sujest that you buy the ravager blade and then upgrade it to a ravager blade+ thats what I did. It really depends on what lvl quests your up to. I'm up to lvl 5 elder quests now and I find that the ravager blade+ plus isn't as effective as it was on previous quests. Good luck!

Rangerman answered:

If you want a powerful weapon yet is somewhat fast, try the lance. It has some good combos and has great defence. You don't get knocked back as often as you do with other weapons cause of the lances giant shield.
