More people to help you would be good, otherwise if you want a chance to drive it away by yourself use dragon weapons if you don't have dragon use fire. Also use the dragonator at the tower & the ballistas.
I just did that quest. I used a hammer with 400 fire and just kept hitting him in the stomach. I didn't bother with the dragon bombs or the large barrel bombs either. I did the quest on my own and lost the first try but repelled him the second time. I used the dragonator in the very last minute, as well as the ballista. You just have to watch his tail when you try to get out of the way to go back to the fort. I brought a farcaster and bomb material + exciteshroom to make more of them.
