I need them for weapons. Probably g-rank. Oh, also how do you get to g-rank? Is it like once you get to a certain hr or to a certain amount of stars at the village?

First g rank is 6* or higher Gathering Hall quests and to get a Rathian or Rathalos Plate you only have about 2-8% chance no matter what of getting one. You can get them from craving the cut-off tail, breaking it's plate/chest (may get in rewards), there are another few ways but I can't remember them.
