Ok well a good way to avoid getting hit (if you have an SnS) is to use the head armour called 'protection peircing'. It basically automatically blocks for you if you arn't in the middle of doing something (eg. Ettacking or facing the wrong way). It is a good way of protecting yourself against being taken by supprise.

I find that the easiest time to attack a rathian is when she throws a fireball. It gives you enough time to run in and hit her in the leg a couple of times, get out and prepare for her next move. If you are on the floor and she is about to attack you, if you are facing the right way then just hold down the block button so she doesn't hit you. Stuff like flashes and pitfall traps help to get hits in, without being attacked too.

I beat the rathian very easily when she throws a fireball aswell but I use SnS and attack her head while she is throwing them.

You can also go around the back of her when she is throwing a fireball to hit the end of her tail. Do this a couple of times and you can get it off.

A rathian is way easier than a rathlos all you need to do is watch it and predict it's next move when a rathian starts to walk it's means it's about to charge so move. The best time to attack it is when it starts triple fireing at you just move to the side and then go for the head just watch you don't get blasted
