If your stuck on the part where the general is sending waves at you, the easiest way to kill the wicker grunts is to stun them.

To counter anything, you have to hold L with the shield and when they attack press O , although it's hard to do as you have to time it right, and it takes longer this way, as you have to counter attack the grint many times, also when stunned it takes a few seconds to kill the wickers with dual kopis of titans, so it's pretty much pointless countering them, takes about 4 counters depending on what weapon your using.
