Near the begining of the game, at a level/stage called Tree of Death, I am told to climb to the top of the hill. So I climb the hill as far as I can, but when I get to a ruined building, I can't go any farther. What do I do now?

Im not very sure what building you are talking about, but next to the building there should be a ramp that takes you to the top of the ruined building

Well it depends on which building you are talking about. If you are talking about the building after the narrator talks about Daxos and the Arcadians then you walk up the building to the right and go to the wall and repeatedly press
X. If you are talking about when you have to find a way to get into the village Ball12 would be the ones instruction's to follow.
