When going to overtake a main city make sure you have allies as reinforcents as they will help your war effort to kill the other enemies and overtake the city.

When you are on the level where you have to takeover the city surrounded by lava and to be able to do that you need to take over the Quarry I've got a tip to do that go to the transportation stone in the Quarry there you should see a big red dot on your radar go towards it kill the beast and get the key then go back to the transportation ston a go down the ramp where the fence with the spikes on is and find the gate along thefence and open then go to the skeleton and free them this way you won't have to face all the enemies which brings you nearly certain death.

When facing an opponent with a shield there is a special way to killing these creeps you can destroy there shields by repeatedly smash the shield until it breaks and then put rips in there flesh. But there are two other ways first you can break the shield by jumping then pressing square to break the shield and smash the face of the idiot or you can do some fast attacks on them by holding L1 and X until he dies.
