I give my life Not for honor, but for you (snake eater) In my time there'll be no one else Crime, it's the way I fly to you (snake eater) I'm still in a dream of the snake eater Someday you go through the rain, Someday you feed on a tree frog, It's ordeal, the trial to survive For the day we see new light I give my life Not for honor, but for you (snake eater) In my time there'll be no one else Crime, it's the way I fly to you (snake eater) I'm still in a dream of the snake eater == MEANING == SPOILERS: If you didn't beat the game, DO NOT read from here on. What I'm writing here is nothing official, it's just my interpretation of what it could mean. If you have another point of view or disagrees with my opinion, you can send me an e-mail and I'll see what I think of your interpretation. This song has a really deep meaning, and totally obscure until you beat the game and be aware of what's really going on. Here I'll quote some lines of the lyrics and write a brief explanation of what it's suposed to mean (in my interpretation). The lyrics are The Boss singing to Jack. "I give my life Not for honor, but for you (snake eater)" Interpretation: We know that The Boss died with no honor at all. He died as a war criminal, although she sacrificed herself and her honor as a soldier. She died knowing it all, and wanted Jack to know it all. She'd didn't die for honor, but would die for Jack. "In my time there'll be no one else" Interpretation: When she died, Jack was the only one with her. He did kill her. "Crime, it's the way I fly to you (snake eater)" Interpretation: She'll be known in History as a war criminal, but she doesn't really cares, since Jack knows who she trully was and how honorable she was. "Someday you go through the rain, Someday you feed on a tree frog, It's ordeal, the trial to survive For the day we see new light" Interpretation: Speaking about the unconfortable situations that Jack is going to pass, surviving in the jungle, but at the end he'll see a new light. That's pretty much it. Thanks for your attention, and let e know about what you think if you disagree, so I can include in the guide, maybe. ========================================================================== ENDING THEME ________ / 0005 | ========================================================================== Song Title: "Way to Fall" Written by James Walsh, James Stelfox, Barry Westhead, Benjamin Byrne Published by EMI Music Publishing Ltd Performed by Starsailor Licensed Courtesy of TOSHIBA-EMI LIMITED Time Length: 4:31 When you hear: - At the credits screen, after beating the game How you can get: - Buy The Original Soundtrack Album - Buying Starsailor CD: "Love is Here" ==== LYRICS ==== Son, you've got a way to fall They'll tell you where to go But they won't know Son, you'd better take it all They'll tell you what they know But they won't show Oh, I've got something in my throat I need to be alone While I suffer Son, you've got a way to kill They're picking on you still But they don't know Son, you'd better wait to shine They'll tell you what is yours But they take mine Oh, I've got something in my throat I need to be alone While I suffer Oh, there's a hole inside my boat I need stay afloat For the summer long (Break) Left my Sweet Soul Beneath the bed clothes I'm not coming down. Part of it is also used during the last battle, a tiny bit of it is used during the campfire scene, and an a capella version is sung on the long ladder leading up to the mountains. It is *not* the main theme of Metal Gear Solid 3.... 02 - Metal Gear Solid Main Theme (Metal Gear Solid 3 Version) ...This is. It's the third Main Theme, and what a worthy addition! This song, unfortunately, never makes it into the game in its full form. It is cut up into segments and scattered throughout the game. The three parts of the game you hear this during are, in the order they appear in the song: When the Shagohod jumps back out of the river during the chase, when Snake is running at the end of the sewers, and at the end of the credits. 03 - CQC This is the music that plays on the title screen. A slightly more interesting version of this song plays in the Camo Index Demo. The other song featured in that demo never made it into the game. 04 - Virtuous Mission This starts off at the very beginning of the first cinema of the game all the way through to the landing at Tselinoyarsk. The interruption for Hideo Kojima's director credit and the mission briefing is not heard. The opening part is used a couple other times throughout the game, such as after Granin's "interrogation", but nothing really worth noting. 05 - One The Ground ~ Battle in The Jungle This track begins with the shedding of Snake's gear, then launches straight into the outdoor Caution song. The outdoor Alert theme that follows isn't actually the one used in the game, but is the same one featured on the First Bite CD in "Infiltration Into The Jungle". The actual Alert theme is quite similar, but not exactly the same. The outdoor Evasion song never appears. 06 - KGBVSGRU This is an extremely shortened version of when Ocelot makes his first appearance. Oddly enough, this doesn't play during the KGB vs. GRU part of the cinema, but when Snake takes on Ocelot and his soldiers in Rassvet. It's rearranged a bit, and the guitar comes out much more clearly on the CD version. 07 - Shagohod This first plays when Sokolov informs Snake about the Shagohod. It plays again shortly when Snake and The Boss are reaching towards each other. It comes up a few more times in the game when people talk about the Shagohod. 08 - Operation Snake Eater This plays right after the "intro" sequence, just before the Snake Eater briefing. 09 - Mission Briefing Plays during the Snake Eater mission briefing. I'm not sure if this is the song that plays during the Virtuous Mission briefing or not, but I don't believe so. This song also splays in Groznyj Grad in the Shagohod's hanger once Snake has been subdued and Volgin tells Snake that he knows that Eva is the spy. 10 - Across The Border ~ Snake Meets The Boss The first part plays when Snake is shot from the plane and back into Tselinoyarsk. The second part plays when you meet The Boss shortly after landing, as well as in Groznyj Grad when you meet Volgin in the Shagohod's hanger. The final part never shows up in the game, but is featured at the end of the GC trailer (the one with the English voice acting). 11 - Eva's Unveiling This starts playing the moment you step out of Sokolov's room. It includes Eva's introduction on the bike, her massacre of the soldiers, and her formal introduction. 12 - Ocelot Youth ~ Confrontation A combination of the music that plays in the pre-Ocelot battle cinema and the Ocelot boss battle music. This is definitely my favorite boss battle song. 13 - The Cobras In The Jungle The beginning of this song is what pays in the cinemas before you fight The Pain and The Sorrow. It also plays after the event with The Sorrow, where you hear him and The Boss talking. The last part plays before the battle with The End, when The End dies, and very briefly when Snake's made it to shore after The Sorrow event. 14 - The Pain The boss battle theme for The Pain. I'd like to note that when uploaded from a CD, the ending appears to be cut off a little short. This is because the very last fraction of a second is at the beginning of the next track. 15 - The Fear The boss battle music for The Fear. 16 - Fortress Sneaking This first plays during the cinema on the docks (when Volgin electrocutes Eva), when Ocelot is twirling The Fear's crossbow at Eva after Volgin leaves from "interrogating" Granin, and again when Sokolov hands the Shagohod data over to Eva. 17 - Underground Tunnel This plays when we are introduced to The Fury, just before his boss battle. 18 - The Fury The Fury's boss battle theme. The fast, "infuriated" part doesn't last very long, unfortunately. 19 - Surfing Guitar One of the Healing Radio tracks. It's my second favorite, right after Sea Breeze. 20 - Sailor One of the Healing Radio tracks. 21 - Salty Catfish One of the Healing Radio tracks. 22 - Old Metal Gear This is the song Granin is listening to in his office when Snake sneaks in. :: Disc 2 :: 01 - Battle In The Base This is the Alert and Caution that plays in the indoor areas like Graniny Gorki and Groznyj Grad. Once again, the Evasion music is MIA. 02 - Volgin, The Torturer Plays during the torture sequence, when Volgin punches the Warehouse wall when he hears that The Pain has been killed, and when Volgin beats the living daylights out of Snake in Sokolov's room. 03 - The Sorrow ~ Everlasting Fight This song is played suring The Sorrow event, the first part is througout the battle, and the second part is played when he and Snake talk. (thanks to Nathon Peldomsc who told me where the second part plays) 04 - Clash With Evil Personified The Volgin boss battle music. It's one of my favorites (though Ocelot beats him out). 05 - Sidecar - Escape From The Fortress - The first of the sidecar event tracks. It plays from the time you start until you get to the bridge. 06 - Sidecar - On The Rail Bridge - The second of the sidecar event tracks. It plays when you have to snipe the C3 on the rail bridge, as well as during the forest chase sequence after fighting the Shagohod. 07 - Takin' On The Shagohod The Shagohod boss battle music. It was known as "The Treading Behemoth" on the First Bite CD. 08 - Escape Through The Woods The first part of this song is the Caution music from the last 2 areas of the game (where you lead Eva around). The second part is the Alert music for those 2 areas. The Alert music was a standalone track called "Escape" on the First Bite CD 09 - Troops In Gathering This is the song that plays during the scene when enemy soldiers find the wreckage of your bike and start looking for you. 10 - Life's End This plays twice: once when The Boss reveals her scar, and then immediately after the last battle. The song that plays after her passing is not present (or even on the OST, for that matter). 11 - Last Showdown This first plays during the sewer scene under Groznyj Grad when Ocelot up. It plays again on the WiG when Ocelot wants another shot at shooting Snake. 12 - The Return Of The MiGs Pretty self-explanatory. This plays during the part of the ending when the MiGs show up to start some trouble. 13 - Don't Be Afraid This plays during the romantic scene between Snake and Eva, and is also a Healing Radio track. It's the only Healing Radio track with lyrics. 14 - Eva's Reminiscence The ending sure is long, isn't it? This plays the morning after when Snake finds and listens to Eva's recorded confession. 15 - Debriefing The very last leg of the ending. This starts as Snake is entering his award ceremony and plays all the way until the credits start. Too be honest, I was getting a little worried the last part (which plays at the end of the E3 2004 trailer) wouldn't show up. 16 - Way To Fall This is the first non-original credits theme in Metal Gear. "Way To Fall" is a song off of British group Starsailor's album "Love Is Here". 17 - Rock Me Baby One of the Healing Radio tracks. 18 - Pillow Talk One of the Healing Radio tracks. 19 - JumpinJohnny One of the Healing Radio tracks. 20 - Sea Breeze One of the Healing Radio tracks, and my personal favorite. 21 - Snake vs Monkey The "Alert" music for the Snake vs. Monkey minigame. I'm not real fond of this track, but probably only for the fact that I was always a pretty upset when I heard it. == OTHER ALBUNS == :: Metal Gear Solid 3 - The First Bite :: Contains the "DPM" Camo Key. It lacks the controversial "tree frog" line, so I guess it gets points for that. 02 - Infiltration Into the Jungle This really is pretty much the same as "One The Ground ~ Battle in The Jungle" (Track 5, disc 1), but it lacks the part where Snake loses his gear, and the Alert and Evasion parts are switched. The Alert theme is a bit different from the one in the game. 03 - Escape The second half of "Escape Through The Woods" (Disc 2, Track 8) of the OST. 04 - Chivalry Track 11 (disc 2) of the official OST. 05 - The Treading Behemoth Track 7 (disc 2) of the official OST. 06 - Snake Eater (Japanese) The Japanese version of "Snake Eater". Since it doesn't appear on the official OST, I presume it never made it into the Japanese release of the game. And yes, that is a woman singing. I don't have the Artist Info for this track, so submissions are welcome (don't just add Wada Akiko to the normal "Snake Eater" info... While it is technically the instrumental version of "Snake Eater", it does feature the whispering "Snake Eater" line the shows up periodically and at the end. During the opening, you can here that line whenever you want by hitting R1. Part of this song was used during the last battle. However, some of the lyrics were used. It was a combination of the instrumental and vocal versions. CONTRIBUTIONS AND CORRECTIONS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME IN THIS GUIDE. In this section we'll talk about the song in each game of this series. :: Metal Gear Solid :: (1998, Playstation) Already in Metal Gear Solid the songs were very efficient in its purpose, setting the surrounding and environment for the player, making the player feel tense when he was suposed to, making the player feel relaxed when necessary. MGS1 had also one of the greatest Ending Themes in game industry (the best, in my opinion), actually the game started and finished with this song, playing some pieces during the game itself. It was the vocalized "The Best Is Yet To Come", composed by Rika Muranaka and performd by Aoife N Fhearraigh, in Gaelic. The MGS Main Theme was composed by TAPPY and was digitally-made. With fast beats and a really catchy music. All the further MGS themes are based upon this one. You must listen to it to understand :) Here are the lyrics and translation of the Ending Theme, in case you are curious or something. The song is written and recorded in Gaelic (language), and you can read below the original lyrics plus the Official English Translation: Song Title: "The Best Is Yet To Come" ==== LYRICS (Original Lyrics in Gaelic) ==== An cuimhin leat an gra Cra croi an ghra Nil anois ach ceol na h-oiche Taim siorai i ngra Leannain le smal Leannain le smal Lig leis agus beidh leat Lig leis agus beidh gra Cuimhne leat an t-am Nuair a bhi tu sasta An cuimhne leat an t-am Nuair a bhi tu ag gaire Ta an saol iontach ma chreideann tu ann Tug aghaidh ar an saoi is sonas siorai inar measc Ceard a tharla do na laethanta sin Ceard a tharla do na h-oicheanta sin An cuimhin leat an t-am Nuair a bhi tu faoi bhron An cuimhin leat an t-am Go siorai sileadh na ndeaor An ormsa na orainne a bhi an locht Ag mothu cailite s'ar fan Cen fath an t-achrann is sileadh na ndeor Ta ailleacht sa saol Ma chuardaionn tu e Ta gliondar sa saol Cuardaimis e ==== LYRICS (Translated to English) ==== Do you remember the time when little things made you happy Do you remember the time when simple things made you smile Life can be wonderful if you let it be Life can be simple if you try What happened to those days? Life can be beautiful if you try Life can be joyful if we try Tell me I am not alone Tell me we are not alone in this world fighting against the wind Do you remember the time when simple things made you happy Do you remember the time when simple things made you laugh You know life can be simple You know life is simple Because the best thing in life is yet to come Because the best is yet to come :: Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty :: (2001, Playstation 2) In an upgraded system now (Playstation 2), and given the good sells that the previous version had, Metal Gear Solid 2 was suposed to be a super- production, from Graphics to Story, obsiously including the sound work. Metal Gear Solid 2 got now an orchestrated Theme Song, wich is simply fantastic. It was a version of the original MGS Theme, now revisited by a Hollywood sound worker: Harry-Gregson Williams. The final work is amazing, and fits the game very well. The Ending Theme was once again composed by Rika Muranaka and performed by Carla White, now not that epic as the previous one, but with a lot of quality too. It is a voice and piano song, with a sax at the end. The in-game music work was performed by Norihiko Hibino, and he does a great work composing digital music for every different situation, area, and boss. Here's the lyrics of the Ending Theme, performed by Rika Muranaka: Song Title: "I Can't Say Goodbye to Yesterday" I stare at the stars, and the sky up above And think what am I made of? Am I full of sorrow, am I hurt and pain? Or am I filled with Love? I walk by myself on the streets below And ask every child I know-- Do you think tomorrow will bring sun or rain? Which one of these will show? I Can't Say Goodbye to Yesterday, my friend I keep holding on 'till the end. Out of the darkness, there is no other way Than the light leading to yesterday. It's there that I'll find inner peace, not war And dreams that I let slip away. I will find the joyfulness, I'm looking for Way back in yesterday. Why can't each of us in the world ever see The best things in life are free? Little sounds of laughter; a warm heart; a smile; A kiss from you to me... I fall to my knees, I cry and I cry, Love, do not pass me by! Happily ever after, Please stay a while; make time refuse to fly. I Can't Say Goodbye to Yesterday, my friend, 'Cause I know how good it has been... Facing forever Here I stand, come what may; Bring the old, bring the new yesterday! It's there that I'll find inner peace not war, And dreams that I let slip away I await the joyfulness; I'm looking for Way back in Yesterday... :: Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes :: (2004, Gamecube) If you don't know, this game was a remake of the original Metal Gear Solid. The game was a result of a partnership between Konami and Nintendo, and was developed by Silicon Knights. The game music were remade as well, by Norihiko Hibino. He made a good work creating the ambient sound for each area. He also revisited the Main Theme, what (in my conception) didn't fit too well, some of military-like music was added, but it just isn't right. Nothing so terrible, though, it's a decent song for a remake. The Ending Theme was kept unspoiled (thanks God), so they used once again "The Best Is Yet To Come" composed and performed by Rika Muranaka. One of the greatest Ending Themes in game industry (the best, in my opinion). It was the vocalized "The Best Is Yet To Come", composed and performed by Rika Muranaka, in Gaelic. :: Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater :: (2004, Playstation 2) Well, this game you should know well, since it's what the guide covers. So let's start with the Main Theme. The Main Theme was composed by Harry-Gregson Williams again, the same who composed MGS2's main theme, a great one. He added more action-like music, a bit of new instruments and that's it. The song is brand-new, but at the end it reminds (if not entirely copies) the MGS2 main theme. I like it very much, and it fits the game too well. Now, about the Opening Theme. It's the first time it happens in the series, having an opening theme. And this one resembles the James Bond's opening themes, and it has a purpose doing so. You can find the lyrics in this guide (0004), vocalized by Cynthia Harrell, composed by Norihiko Hibino and produced by Rika Muranaka. It's a great song, in my opinion, and acomplishes its work very well. The Ending Theme wasn't produced for the game, like it had always been before, an existing song was picked up. The song is "Way to Fall", the lyrics you can find in this guide (0005). The song is performed by Starsailor. It's a beautiful song, I just don't know how to describe it. Well, beat the game and listen to it =) Credits to: - Mad Jackyl, who corrected me about who performs the Metal Gear Solid Ending Theme "The Best Is Yet To Come" - El Greco, who corrected me about who performs the Metal Gear Solid 2 Ending Theme "I Can't Say Goodbye to Yesterday" ========================================================================== VERSION HISTORY ________ / 0009 | ========================================================================== Version 1.00 (06/22/2005) - Added 'Music in MGS' section - Added Opening Theme Meaning Version 0.91 (03/07/2005) - Broken links fixed.
