Final Thoughts/Words/Hints/Tips ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ENDURANCE RACES - THE ULTIMATE CHALLENGE OF DETERMINATION AND PATIENCE ---------------------------------------------------------------------- In the history of Gran Tursimo, no race has been more challenging than that of the endurance class. However, the introduction of the new B-Spec racing style in Gran Turismo 4, this has been relatively easier, and in reach of mere mortals like ourselves. ------ B-SPEC - (GTBS) ------ This new style of play puts you in the manager seat of the game. You can command your driver how fast to drive, how aggressive he should be and pit strategies. In short, it makes completing long and tedious endurance races fairly easy. ------------ USING B-SPEC ------------ USing B-Spec mode is quite simple and self explanatory. Please refer to walkthroughs and mode guides to grasp the detailed parts. As for the A-Spec mode, I will assume that nobody in their right mind can spend up to 24 hours staring at a television, so I will not be covering this racing mode. Here, I will outline the most important functions of B-Spec racing only: 1. Race Monitor This screen is the control panel of the B-Spec mode. Through it, you can adjust all the settings mentioned below. 2. Pace Setting, Overtake and Pit in There are 5 different paces which you can set to which the driver will drive to. Ideally, the Medium setting is the norm, but for tougher races, using the increased and push hard modes are needed to overtake other cars. The overtake option should always be selected, so as to enable your car to lap other cars. The pit option should automatically come on if the car is in danger of running out of fuel, or losing traction. 3. Course Map Your guide to what happens on the race track is through this map. Indication of when race cars drift onto gravel and racing positions are displayed on the left of the map. 4. Distance Timeline This is found at the bottom of the monitor screen. It displays visually and in feet or laps the distance between the cars. It is good for gaining a general idea of the amount of lead a car has over the others. 5. Pitting information/Tyre Status This section allows you to monitor tyre wear and the three previous times the car has pitted in, including what tyres were fitted. This is a useful guide when calculating pit strategies and what tyres to use. 6. Total Race time Probably the most interesting of the sections, here you can see the total amount of time the race has elapsed for. However, using the speed up function of the mode, this can be sped up to a maximum of three times normal time elapse, allowing you to finish a race in around a third of the stated time, (e.g. 24 hours becomes only 8 hours) ------------------- THE RACING STRATEGY ------------------- Due to the introduction of the time elapse rate increase, you are now able to complete an endurance race in a third of the time required. However, a well structured strategy must be used in order to complete any endurance race. The following is a developed strategy for the completion and winning of ANY endurance race: ==================== PREPARATION TO BEGIN - (GTR1) ==================== Before attempting anything, ensure that the experience of your B-spec driver is at an adequete level, (i.e. around 5000 to 7000+). The reason for this is the greater the overall experience, the better the driver will perform, making it easier for you to win the race. Once this has been checked, you should look at the endurance race you want to enter. To do this use a car which is eligible for entry to view a preview of the race. You will not have to watch the entire thing, but have an accurate stopwatch ready. Start the timer as soon as the first car crosses the start line and watch it for one lap. Then, stop the timer when it crosses the finish line. Make a note of the time it took for the lead car to complete the single lap. Also, take note at points where the lead car brakes or slows down. Once done, you can quit the preview. -------------- Tyres - (GTTY) -------------- Now choose the car you wish to enter with. Ideally it should have a greater BHP or Power to Weight ratio than the lead car you timed. Bear in mind that the handling is also important, but the higher the B-Spec skill, the more easily the driver can handle any car. Make sure that the car you use has the correct set of tyres needed for the race. This is generally based upon the drivetrain of the car: - Mid Engine, Rear wheel drive (MR) = 1 set of Super Hard tyres (Back) 1 set of Hard tyres (Front) - Front Engine, Rear wheel drive (FR) = 1 set of Super Hard/Hard tyres (Front and Back) - Front Engine, Front wheel drive (FF) = 1 set of Super Hard tyres (Front) 1 set of Hard tyres (Back) - Rear Engine, Rear wheel drive (RR) = 1 set of Super Hard tyres (Back) 1 set of Hard/Medium tyres (Front) - 4 wheel drive (4WD) = 1 set of Super Hard/Hard tyres (Front and Back) The various properties of tyres are important in deciding what tyres to use. Ideally, the wear rate of all four tyres should be the same (i.e. the same colours all the time). For endurance races, it is advisable to use hard or superhard tyres, depending on the drivetrain. ---------------- PREPARATION TIPS ---------------- - The car you are planning to use should be preferably new and fully tuned to give it the best possible chance of winning. However, installing a rear spoiler, or NO2 canister is not required, unless the power of the chosen car is very close to the timed lead car. - Most cars do not require their settings to be adjusted in order to win, however, you can adjust the ride height and other speed enhancements if there is difficulty in gaining pole position. - A good method of seeing if your chosen car can win the race is by having a test run on the course completed by the B-Spec driver, setting the car up just as you would if you had entered the race. If the average lap time of three laps is faster than the timed lead car, then that car should in theory be able to win, depending on the range of the difference. - Make sure you know how to confidently operate your stopwatch. It serves a very important role later in the strategy. ======================== TIME TO RACE... - (GTR2) ======================== Before attempting the race, I suggest you pick a date where you will be playing for the the shortened duration of the race, for even if it is running at B-Spec, you will need to still monitor the race at certain points. Ideally, the Playstation should be situated well out of reach of places where it may be accidently reset. The worst thing to happen is if you run a 24 hour race, and at the 23rd hour, lose it all because of bumping into the reset switch. To lighten the boredom, have an alternative task to do while the racing, (e.g. surf the web, watch satellite/cable TV, or write a FAQ!!!) When you feel you are ready to enter the race, proceed through the endurance hall and select to enter your race. On the car position screen, have a look at the competition you will face and see if any of them pose any sort of threat. If a car outclasses you greatly, and hasn't appeared before in the preview, then quit and try again to see if you can get a better lineup. In addition, check that the settings of your car is what you want, e.g. the right tyres have been selected. When satisfied, select to enter the race using the B-Spec mode. ---------------------------------------------------------- UTILISING THE RACE MONITOR AND STOPWATCH STRATEGY - (GTSW) ---------------------------------------------------------- Once in the race, access the race monitor via the R1 button. Now, speed up the time elapse to triple the normal speed via holding down L1 and tapping the right keypad button twice. (an orange 'x3' next to the total elapsed time will indicate this). Now, concentrate on gaining first place. Have your car pace going at push hard pace, reducing it to increased or medium at difficult bends where drifing and skidding can occur at high speed. Continue doing so until you have gained the lead. then reduce the pace to increased and try to gain some distance between you and the car in 2nd place. Once the car has gained a reasonable distance (in the 1000's+ feet), you can sit back and relax for a while until the car pits in for the first time. You may find that your car pits in usually a lap before the others, due to the increased pace. Do not worry, as their cars will pit in the following lap. When this occurs, your car should have the speed and power to overtake them while they pit in. Even if after the first pit in, you are still in last place, during the following laps, you should be able catch up steadily until you regain 1st place. When your car is about to pit in (when the race monitor disappears), have your stopwatch ready. At the precise point when the option menu for pit action appears, start the stopwatch. Then make the pit decisions accordingly, keeping the mode at B-Spec, changing tyres and refuelling. After the pitwork, the car will exit the pits. Immediately after the exit, revert back to the race monitor screen, and speed up time again. Now watch and wait until the car pits in for the second time, and when the menu appears again, stop the stopwatch and record the time. Make the selections and whilst they are being performed, either reset the stopwatch or enter the time recorded onto a count down timer. Again, the car will exit the pits, whereupon you will have to bring up the race monitor and speed up time. Then wait for the third time the car pits in, and upon seeing the menu screen again, start the count down timer or stopwatch. Make sure you have noted down or remembered the time. Again, confirm the pit menu, and after it exits, bring up the race monitor and speed up time. Set the pace to medium or possibly reduced if you have a decent lead. Now you are free to do you other activity!! The slower the pace, the greater time you will have to carry on with your other activity. 10 minutes is the ideal time, and 15 minutes will allow you to watch a quarter of an hour long TV program, going back to the race during the break. However, keep an eye on the time on the stopwatch to check if it is approaching the noted time. Continue this process throughout the rest of the race, remembering to select the correct pit options, switching back to the race monitor and speeding up time. Soon, this will become routine, and you will be able to complete the above steps in less than 2 seconds. ----------- RACING TIPS ----------- - Having a count down timer, which alerts you when the time is up thorough beeping provides a better timing device than a stopwatch, to which if you get too involved in the alternative task, you will forget to observe. A timer which can be reset a with one press of a button is also more advantageous. - If your Cable system and Playstation system are on different 'AV' channels, then you can alternate between them at a flick of a switch, allowing you to watch TV and complete the race at the same time. - Start with the easiest endurance races, then work your way up. This will give you more experience of using the strategy and will help you complete the hardest of the endurance races. --------------------------- COMPLEX STRATEGIES - (GTCS) --------------------------- Harder and more details strategies can be developed from my base one. The following is only a number of advanced strategies I and my friends have developed: 1. TV priority (Operation 'Lazy Man') This is a version of the base strategy which allows the user to watch TV and race without ever having to refer back to the racing screen. The timing has to be exact to the second in order to carry out. Instead of starting the timer when the pit option menu appears, start it when the car leaves the pit for the first time. However, when it enters the pit for the second time, DO NOT press anything when the pit menu is displayed. Allow the car to arrive at the pit and wait. After around 5 seconds, the pit team will get to work, and the car will exit the pit, at which the timer is stopped. Now all you have to do is enter it into a timer, and wait for the next pit in, where it will be started upon the exit of the car. After this, you can flick over to watch TV, at which when the time reaches zero, the timer is first reset, then the key combination of R1, L1+>> is entered, therefore resuming the time elapse. This method eliminates switching to and fro between channels, but the player should check from time to time that the strategy still works. 2. Pre-Lap Pit in By pitting in 1 lap earlier than the opponents, you will gradually be able to gain the lead after a few more pit ins, providing that your car has enough power. This usually happens anyway, but you can influence pit ins using the circle button. 3. Post-Lap Pit in This is the opposite of the pre-lap pit in. By pitting in one lap later than the other cars, you will be able gain a great lead over them, providing that the car has enough power and speed, and is able to go quickly, without drifting on worn out tyres for one lap. This strategy will require high B-Spec experience, and a car with decent handling on worn out tyres. ---------------------- Alternative Strategies - (GTAS) ---------------------- Here are some alternative strategies submitted by other players: I thought i would share my way of completing the 24hr endurance races quickly. It's really simple, and you get to sleep! All you have to do is make sure that you can win the race. For example, in the Nurburgring, I used the Minolta Toyota 88C-V race car. This car can win by about 20 laps. Once you know that you will win easily, start the race, and then go to bed. When you wake up in the morning, the race will be 12hrs done, meaning that it only takes 4hrs to complete, instead of 8hrs. Using this tactic, I won the 24hr races in no time at all. Submitted by Stuart Milne (16:25 11/04/2005) ========= THE RACES ========= The following is a list of all the endurance races featured in Gran Tursimo 4. There are two types of races, time based and lap based, along with recommended cars and general information (Asterixed cars are what I used): ----------- Car Ratings - (GTCR) ----------- Most endurance races will require the use of cars of the race car class. To simplify the huge number of race cars, I have sub-divided them into three sections: 1. Powerful - These are generally the lowest performance level of race cars, between 200-300 BHP (non-tuned), including the Mazda RX-7 LM Race Car, and Cheverolet Camaro Race Car etc. 2. High Performance (Post 1990) - These are the medium level of race cars, generally having between 400-800 BHP (non-tuned), including the Mercedes AMG CLK-GTR Race Car and Mazda 787B Race Car etc. 3. Top Performance - These are the best Race Cars on offer, with a greater power to weight ratio than the other race cars. Such cars include the Audi R8 Race Car and the Bentley Speed 8 Race Car. ----------------------------- Full Endurance Races - (GTRL) ----------------------------- Course - Grand Valley Speedway (Long Course, 300km) Lap number/Time - Care for the car you raced with before pouncing on the new one! - When just starting to participate in endurance races, go for the 24 hr Nurburgring endurance. if you have a highly tuned post 1990 race car, then there will be no problems when you try to win, (possibly a Mercedes AMG CLK-GTR Race car). After this race, you will win the Polyphony Formula Gran Turismo, which you can use in several other endurance races too. -FINALLY...MAKE SURE YOU SAVE STRAIGHT AFTER THE RACE BEFORE SOMETHING HAPPENS, (e,g, power cuts, accidental resets etc.) ========== Last words ========== =============================================================================== This guide may not be copied, presented or altered in any way without my permission.
