The quickest way to get a good army (my personal favorite army consisting of orcs, elves, dragons, knights, and druids or archmages -- long range is your friend) is to go to good areas first. I suggest prowling the edges of the continent you're on and opening all the chests, and with luck, receiving the map to the next location and high-tailing it there to repeat the process. Then, once you have a satisfactory army, then come back and fight in castles, get promotions, and get the chests on the inside of the continent. Little tip: you might want to use Time Stop when you're searching through chests, so you don't waste all of those days.
