Ramza is the main character.

All I can say is get into battles and just fight to level up. The execution site is one of the hardest battles in the game (believe me, my first time around I tried about 20 times) so your people have to be at much higher levels than those of the bad guys. My favorite formation is :
Ramza, Knight (put Guts as his second ability)
Male Lancer (if you don't have lancer, Knight)(Basic Skills as second ability)
Female Archer (Item or Punch Art as second ability)
Male Monk (Geomancer as second ability or some magic)
Male or Female Wizard or Time Mage or PREFERABLY Summonner (White magic as second ability)
This is a very strong formation to use. If you can only take four people, then take out the archer. Train using this formation. If you haven't already, make everybody learn the JP up abiity as a Squire and set it while training. You'll learn new attacks A LOT QUICKER.
If you can't train for some reason, then all I can say is good luck because you'll need it. Word to the wise: go for Gafgarion first. Once he's dead, the battle is a lot easier. Stay out of the reach of the time mages so they'll come down. That's all I can say.
