cheat doesn't work?

I discovered the cheat for invincibility (L1, R2, R1, L2, select, X, O)
Now when I type it in at the title screen/main menu - once you press X it starts the game, so how can you complete the cheat?
It doesn't work anyway when I press circle either, anybody know whats wrong? - what am I missing? :[
