How do you get Merry and Pippin out of old man willows mouth and don't say just keep hitting his fists because i've tried that and you just get a message saying you've hit him too many times and Merry and Pippin have perished?

Acctually you have to hit the fists of old man willow but if you hit his trunk 3 times with rocks Merry and Pippin will die (easiest way to hit fists is with the staff be in a place where he can't hit you then run up and hit his fist after a minute or two tom bombadil will show up and set them free)
