Question for Mass Effect 2

Ok, I'm having trouble after Jack's loyalty mission, when you get back to the ship you have to break up a cat fight between Jack an Miranda, Well I have to pick one to side with but my question is how can you choose a paragon or renegade option, how much do you have to have your meter filled? Cause that mission is causing one of them to die at the end mission cause there not loyal, please help I've played through the game 3 times now an can't figure it out. Thank you

You're Paragon/Renegade has to be pretty high for you to do this. It worked for me because I was pretty much full Paragon on my playthrough. What I've heard worked is to tell Miranda to back off. Then gain more paragon points, and later before the final mission, talk to her and there should be an option for you to convince her to stay loyal.

The only way to have peace between them before the mission is have your Paragon or Renegade up very high. Choice on of the two colored options. If it is grayed out, then you are unable to use it. Same thing with Legion and Tali (If you don't have her father's name taken away from the fleet). If you choice to side with one of them, you have to have high Paragon or Renegade and talk to them before you go on the final mission.
