How do you "turn off" your current duel spirit and is that necessary in order to get a new duel spirit to join you?

You can't switch spirits after you get one. You can switch them out though.
Ok, having a duel spirit wen you want another spirit doesnt effect you're chances to get it, they are hard but try using you're spirit card to deplete it's lp it hightens you're chance from 20per cent to 30 percent.
