You must obtain the shovel from Ms weeder then just dig anywhere. To get the shovel you must have ms weeder in the green (shes the plant lady) Just give her bananas from the tree right next to her house. Then once you can click offer help then she asks you to do these tasks which one of them involes the canoe so if you have made that then you won't be much help yet. So if you havent made the canoe then get the chef on your good side by talking to him or giving him eggs then once you complete his tasks then you get a chisel which is one thing you need to help you make the canoe, the other is a hammer which you can craft at the crafting station. Hopefully this helps
